Celiac update

Well, it's been 6 months since we started our gluten free diet so the kids had their blood tested to check their levels (and they didn't even shed a tear!). We were very happy to find out their numbers have gone way done from 140's to 39 and 40 for both of them. Under 15 is within normal range, so we still have a little ways to go, but we're on the right track! They've been doing great and we all actually feel a lot better not having it in our diet. We still do not eat out (maybe on a rare occasion to a 100% GF restaurant), which is hard when we travel, but we seem to figure it out. It just takes a lot of planning! We do go out for frozen yogurt and have found that Divine and Menchies has delicious GF flavors! Isaiah has been great about reminding his teachers to change their gloves when giving him his snack and asking it what's given to him is GF. Ashley usually just eats what I pack her everyday, but her teacher has also been great in trying to include her when they have treats at school. We email back and forth to figure out something that's safe for her. She doesn't want Ashley to feel left out which is really sweet. She did win a lunch with her teacher for a reading contest. The teacher bought the other kids pizza, so I just packed her a little something special in her lunch and she was happy with that. I wonder if this kind of thing will bother them later, but for now they both seem ok with it all. The risk of getting sick isn't worth it. Through all these blood tests we have also found that Ashley has hypothyroid. Her bloodwork is normal for antibodies, so she doesn't have Hashimoto's (another autoimmune disease), but it's something we need to look more into. We're meeting with a specialist to see if she needs to start medication or just have follow up. Poor thing has been poked too much! We're also watching Isaiah to see if he's allergic to eggs. He had a reaction a few days before New Year's and broke out in hives all over his body. He had started to eat a lot of eggs around that time and since Brian gets hives if he eats too many eggs, we thought that might be the cause. We took eggs out of his diet for 2 weeks and have reintroduced them 1 day/week for the past few weeks and he seems to be handling them fine. The Dr said the hives may have been from a virus, but still suggested that we add the allergy test to his bllodwork in 6 months when we test again for the celiac. I think we'll also check his Thryoid since finding out about Ashley's. Afterall that is how we found out about Isaiah having Celiac.
